Our Freestanding Emergency Department (FED) is open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to treat emergency medical conditions. The FED at UAB Medical West features experienced personnel, full-service diagnostic equipment, and 24/7 access for anyone in need of emergency medical care.
The UAB Medical West FED provides emergency services equivalent to a hospital-based emergency department (ED). The only difference is that the UAB Medical West FED is conveniently located closer to home instead of on a hospital campus. If there is a need for admission, the UAB Medical West FED will arrange transport via a local ambulance service to a hospital for admission.

In essence—there’s not much of a difference. The biggest difference is that our emergency clinic is not on a larger hospital campus.
The UAB Medical West FED offers the same emergency treatment that patients receive in a traditional hospital-based emergency room. The UAB Medical West FED will also honor the same 30-minute ED pledge as the hospital-based ED, saving valuable time for patients.
While we are equipped to handle “urgent” medical needs, we are not an “urgent care” facility. The UAB Medical West FED is open 24/7 and is staffed by board-certified Emergency Physicians and experienced nursing staff. The primary difference between the UAB Medical West FED and most urgent care facilities is that our FED can provide more robust service. No appointment is needed. In fact, we don’t take appointments at the UAB Medical West FED. This department operates as an emergency clinic, so you can come right in and be seen when you need medical attention the most. David Denney, M.D., originally from Opp, Alabama, is an Emergency Medicine Physician at UAB Medical West Hospital in Bessemer, AL. He is also Medical Director of Bessemer Emergency Physicians at the hospital. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Samford University and went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed both his internship and residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, AL.
