UAB Medical West is Raising Awareness for Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women across the United States. It’s often called the “silent killer” because many sufferers don’t experience symptoms until it’s too late. And while developing heart disease can sometimes be out of our control, there are various risk factors you can avoid, such as an unhealthy diet and lack of physical exercise.

This February, UAB Medical West is celebrating American Heart Month by raising awareness of this silent killer. Our community involvement, advances in heart treatment, and more are just the beginning of our investment in heart care in Alabama. Keep on reading to learn more about UAB Medical West’s fight against heart disease!

UAB Medical West Is Fighting Heart Disease This February

At UAB Medical West, we provide cardiology services and emergency care near your community. We’re dedicated to your heart health with various centers in Bessemer, Hueytown, Vance, Tannehill, and Hoover. Learn about our involvement in Birmingham’s Heart Walk, our recent hire in the cardiology department, and the common signs of heart disease. By raising awareness and recognizing the warning signs of heart disease, you may just save a life.

Making Strides in the Cardiology Department

At UAB Medical West, we’re treating patients today for a better tomorrow. We’re always looking to expand and strengthen our departments in our forward-thinking strategy. In the past few months, we’ve added a great addition to our cardiology team—Ashley Boler.

Boler is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP). Her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama propelled her studies at The University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB), where she completed her Master of Science in Nursing. Since then, Boler has provided hands-on heart health for patients at our Bessemer location and is quickly becoming a key member of our cardiology team.

Raising Awareness in February–and Beyond

At UAB Medical West, we seek to educate our patients and the surrounding community not only during American Heart Month but also every day of the year. If you recognize the signs of heart disease in yourself or a loved one, you may prevent a heart attack or other health complications. While there are various symptoms for specific conditions under the umbrella of heart disease, there are a few general signs to look out for.

Some common symptoms of heart disease include:

  • Chest pain

  • Shortness of breath
  • Changes in skin color
  • Heart palpitations (heart beating too fast or irregularly)
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness
  • Excessive sweating
  • Pain that extends to the arm
