Water… so what’s the big deal?
Well, it does make up about 60% of your body, give or take a percentage point. It also keeps every single part of your body working like it should. In particular, it does a good job of keeping us at the right temperature. It also helps us flush wastes and prevent kidney stones and constipation.
Water is constantly escaping our bodies, through breath, urine, sweat, etc. And yes, if you live in a warmer climate, then you’re losing water even more rapidly. And what goes out, we need to replace.
That’s why doctors (and mothers) are always telling you to drink more water. So, how much is the right amount?
The ‘right’ number for YOU really depends on a lot of different factors – how often you exercise, where you live (hot/cold climate), if you’ve been sick, if you are pregnant, on and on. But generally, about half a gallon of water (or 8 ounces, 8 times – the 8×8 Rule) per day will typically keep a person hydrated. You just have to adjust with our personal situation.
If you don’t keep up with your water intake, it’d be a good idea to start. But some signs that you may be not getting enough water could be hard bowel movements or constipation, or if your urine is a darker yellow, you probably aren’t drinking enough water. Those are two quick ways to tell.
And to help out, here are some ways to get more water. Make an effort here, and they’ll soon be part of your routine.
- Drink a glass of water first thing after waking up.
- Keep a cup or water bottle by your desk, keep taking sips throughout the day.
- If you see a drinking fountain, take a sip!
- If you’re tired of water over and over, add one of the many flavoring packets available today. Or just good ‘ol lemon or lime!
The point of it all is that when your body is well hydrated, you’re putting your body in the best position to operate like it should. And a healthier you is a happier you! Now go drink some water!
