Joint Replacement Center

Introducing the Joint Replacement Center at UAB Medical West.

Improving pain control and earlier mobilization for our patients.

What is the Joint Replacement Center at UAB Medical West?

The Joint Replacement Center is a designated area of the hospital prioritizing the care of postoperative hip and knee replacement patients. Our goal is to provide patients with a consistently safe and comfortable experience after having their knee or hip replaced, while maintaining the highest standards of quality. We accomplish this by adhering to clinically proven evidence-based practices as recognized by the Joint Commission.

Joint replacement patients have unique challenges perioperatively, and our aim is to have consistent nurses, therapists, and case managers who are familiar with the care and goals unique to these patients. In order to inform patients of these care goals, we integrate a hands-on preoperative educational class called “Joint Camp.”

  • A 2-hour educational course to inform patients about processes to expect
  • A chance to actively participate in therapy
  • A time to discuss expectations about recovery
  • A time to work closely with Primary Care providers to ensure patients are as healthy as possible prior to their surgery

More Information about our Total Joint Center

Our surgical team includes anesthesiologists who are well-versed in perioperative strategies including nerve blocks to improve pain control. Our surgeons are familiar with several techniques we believe improve early recovery; including an anterior approach to the hip and muscle sparing approach to the knee.

After surgery, patients will be transferred to the “Joint Replacement Center”, where nursing staff is well-versed in multimodal analgesia and are able to prioritize a comfortable and safe transition to postoperative recovery. Patients will begin working with therapists and generally start walking the same day. Our case managers meet with family and help streamline the discharge process to ensure a safe transition to home by arranging for equipment and home health care.
