Fall Fitness – Stay Active All Season Long

Exercise provides a variety of benefits, including the opportunity to get outside and get fresh air. While the weather may be getting cooler, that doesn’t mean you have to stop exercising or move your activities indoors. The Seven Best Exercises to Stay Healthy This Fall

With average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in Birmingham during the fall, the weather is still comfortable enough to spend time outdoors. Below are some exercises that will help you to do just that. 

Many of these activities can be done year-round with some modifications, but cooler fall temperatures make them more enjoyable than exercising in the summer heat. As with any new exercise, consult your doctor first. 

1. Running

Running during the summer months can be hot and uncomfortable. During the fall, cooler temperatures allow you to run faster and further because you’re not battling the heat, which can strain your heart. Also, depending on where you go for a run, you get to enjoy the view offered by the changing colors of leaves on the trees. 

2. Hiking & Climbing

Going on a hike allows you to enjoy the view of the changing leaves while getting some exercise during the fall. You don’t need to be an expert mountain climber or hiker, either. There are many easy hikes near Birmingham that are ideal for those who are less experienced or may have mobility issues due to age or other factors. 

Though, if you are looking for more of a challenge, fall is a great time to hike up a mountain to enjoy the view from above. The drier weather also makes climbing easier for beginners as there is less of a risk of slipping on wet rocks or other surfaces. Regardless of the weather, consider your own abilities before departing on a hike.

3. Outdoor Yoga

When most people think of yoga, they think of yoga studios with mats and mirrors. However, yoga is not just an indoor activity. Outdoor yoga is a popular fitness activity that can be done in the cooler fall months to exercise both your body and your mind. You can take your yoga mat outside or just use the grass as your mat. 

4. Kayaking

Kayaking is more than just a simple boat ride. It is a great exercise that can be done in the fall or other seasons where the water is still reasonably warm. There are many lakes and other bodies of water close to Birmingham, so you don’t need to travel too far to enjoy this activity or other water sports. 

5. Biking

Whether you bike for fitness or transportation, fall is a great time to go for a ride. If you bike to work or school, consider taking the scenic route to enjoy the beauty of fall in Alabama while getting some much-needed exercise. You can even bring the entire family along, as fall is a great time to teach your child to ride a bicycle. 

6. Outdoor Team Sports

While your children may play sports through their school, team sports are not just for kids anymore. Many recreation centers offer adult leagues for a variety of outdoor sports, including:

  • Soccer
  • Softball
  • Pickleball
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball

Many of these teams are open to players of all ages, genders, and abilities. Even if you’ve never played a sport before, your teammates would be willing to teach you. Best of all, you get some friendly competition while spending time outdoors. 

7. Yardwork

Though you may not think of outdoor chores as exercise, they can be. Falling leaves on your property mean you need to rake them. This important task will allow you to not only clean your yard but also spend time outside getting exercise. Other physically active fall yardwork tasks include winterizing garden beds, cleaning gutters, and putting up holiday decorations.
