As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, UAB Medical West is proud to announce a major advancement in women’s health services: the launch of Breast MRI imaging, available starting October 1st at our Diagnostic Imaging Center.
This new offering underscores our commitment to early detection, advanced diagnostics, and compassionate care; because when it comes to breast health, access to high-quality imaging can make all the difference.
What is a Breast MRI?
A Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a powerful diagnostic tool that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create highly detailed images of the breast tissue. Unlike traditional mammograms, which use X-rays, MRI does not involve radiation and can detect abnormalities that might be missed on a standard mammogram or ultrasound.
This makes Breast MRI especially valuable for:
- Women at high risk for breast cancer (e.g., strong family history or known genetic mutations like BRCA1/BRCA2)
- Further evaluation of abnormalities found on a mammogram
- Monitoring treatment response in breast cancer patients
- Evaluating breast implants and post-surgical changes
By adding Breast MRI to our suite of imaging services, UAB Medical West is providing women with another layer of security in their breast health journey.
The Right Test at the Right Time
While mammography remains the gold standard for routine screening, it’s not always enough. For women with dense breast tissue, traditional imaging can be limited in its ability to detect tumors. Breast MRI helps bridge that gap.
According to the American Cancer Society, Breast MRI is recommended in conjunction with mammography for women who have a lifetime breast cancer risk of 20% or greater.
This includes women with:
- Strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer
- Personal history of breast cancer or high-risk lesions
- Genetic predispositions
- Prior chest radiation therapy (e.g., for lymphoma)
What to Expect During a Breast MRI
The process of getting a Breast MRI is safe, painless, and non-invasive. Here’s what patients can typically expect:
- Pre-screening: Patients will answer questions to ensure MRI is the right test for them and to identify any contraindications, such as metal implants or severe claustrophobia.
- Contrast agent: A safe contrast dye (gadolinium) is injected into a vein to help highlight areas of concern within the breast tissue.
- Imaging: Patients lie face down on a specialized MRI table with cushioned openings for the breasts. The scan typically takes 30–60 minutes.
- Aftercare: Patients can usually return to their normal activities immediately after the scan.
Our trained imaging technologists and radiologists guide patients through the process with professionalism, compassion, and care. We know imaging can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when it’s related to cancer screening, and we’ll be by your side every step of the way.

Launching in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It’s no coincidence that we’re launching Breast MRI during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is a time when we reflect, educate, and advocate for early detection—because it saves lives.
According to the CDC, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, and early detection remains the most effective defense. By expanding access to Breast MRI, we are equipping our community with more powerful tools to detect and monitor breast cancer in its earliest stages.
At UAB Medical West, our mission is simple: better access, better outcomes, and better support; right here, close to home.
