This month marks one year since we opened the doors of our new UAB Medical West hospital, and it’s a milestone worth celebrating. In just twelve months, we’ve seen firsthand how the expanded space, advanced technology, and innovative services have transformed the way we deliver care.
One of the most telling examples of our impact? Our Emergency Department managed an incredible 45,154 visits in its first year, demonstrating the critical role we play in providing urgent care to our community.
More importantly, this anniversary is about the patients and families we’ve been able to serve. Every number, every new treatment, and every story reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible health care close to home.
New Services & Expanded Capabilities
One of the greatest achievements of our first year in the new hospital has been the introduction of services and technology that expand what we can offer our patients. We launched several new clinical programs, including interventional cardiology, endocrinology, and rheumatology, which provide patients with access to expert care for complex health conditions.
We’ve also introduced inpatient hyperbaric oxygen therapy, expanding treatment options for wound healing and other medical needs. The arrival of our second Da Vinci surgical robot means we can perform a greater volume of minimally invasive procedures with remarkable precision. A third ECHO machine has strengthened our cardiology program by expanding our capacity for detailed heart imaging.
Our neurosurgical team also has updated spine and cranial equipment, allowing them to perform more advanced procedures safely and effectively. These capabilities, combined with the dedication of our staff, ensure that we are meeting the evolving needs of the community with confidence.
Community Impact and Outreach
Beyond medical services, our first year has underscored the hospital’s role as a cornerstone of the community. In addition to adding 134 medical providers, we’ve hosted health fairs, and other educational seminars that bring preventive care directly to our neighbors. Our physicians and nurses have partnered with schools, churches, and local organizations to promote wellness and provide resources that extend far beyond the hospital walls.
We’ve also been able to support local economic growth by adding hundreds of jobs, expanding opportunities for residents, and building partnerships with area businesses. Just as importantly, our commitment to serving both urban and rural populations has helped bridge gaps in access to care. Every initiative, from community outreach to workforce development, has been guided by the mission to serve and uplift those who call this area home.
