What Is an Orthopedic Doctor?
An orthopedic doctor diagnoses, manages, and treats conditions related to the musculoskeletal system, which comprises the bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Since this system is vast, many orthopedic doctors choose to specialize in certain areas, like the knees, back, hips, and more.
Depending on your provider, your orthopedic doctor is an orthopedic specialist but not necessarily an orthopedic surgeon. Orthopedic specialists and doctors can help diagnose, treat, and manage your musculoskeletal issue, but as their name suggests, only surgeons can perform surgical treatment. Orthopedic surgeons can evaluate and treat just as orthopedic doctors can, but with the added benefit of performing surgery for treatment if needed.
Some common reasons you may see an orthopedic doctor include the following:
- Hip pain
- Hamstring tightness
- Arthritis
- Arm or hand pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Knee pain
- Hip pain
Whether you’ve sprained your ankle, torn a ligament, or need help managing your arthritis, an orthopedic doctor can help. Learn more about orthopedics at UAB Medical West, including our primary providers, and how we can help you find relief from your pain.
