Sunny with the Chance of a Cold

Colds seem to be quite common when chilly weather moves in; however, catching a cold can be just as easy to do in the heat of summer. Many mistake a summer cold for other issues like allergies, but common colds are just as easily spread during the summer months. So, how can you tell if it’s a summer cold or something else?

Typically, allergies and colds are confused because they share traits of sneezing, runny nose, congestion, and itchy or sore throats. Colds can be differentiated by symptoms like coughing, sweating, and fever. Allergies also tend to last longer than just a cold’s duration of one to two weeks. In addition, if you have a cold, your symptoms will change in severity – beginning mild, worsening, and then returning to mild, whereas allergy symptoms will be consistent. Finally, your nasal discharge may be different. The mucus from a cold is typically thick and a green or yellowish color. If you have allergies, mucus is normally translucent and thinner in consistency.

Soothing a summer cold can look a lot like soothing a winter cold. Staying inside can be difficult when the weather is beautiful, but resting and getting plenty of sleep will ease the strain on your immune system. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, as the weather is hot and can make it more difficult to maintain hydration. Ensure you have a strong intake of vitamins and minerals, such as iron, vitamin C, and zinc.

While there is no way to entirely prevent yourself from getting a cold regardless of season, there are ways to reduce your chances of getting one. Eating nutritious foods, avoiding stress and taking supplements that contain immune-boosting remedies will assist your immune system. Adequate sleep is also essential to reset the immune system to function properly each day. Washing your hands, especially in public spaces, is key. Finally, avoid those who have a cold. If you do interact with someone who has a cold, wash up quickly afterward.

Even when it’s not chilly outside, common colds should still be prevented. By taking these steps, you can enjoy your summer days with no interruption of these pesky symptoms.
