What Is a Wound Care Clinic?
Wound care clinics are designed to help patients heal quickly and efficiently. If your injury hasn’t been responding to the prescribed treatment, or it’s been over two weeks without improvement, you may need medical attention.
Some other symptoms of wounds that need specialized treatment include:
- Foul or unusual odor
- Frequent bleeding or a wound that hasn’t scabbed over after two-three weeks
- Fever
- Discharge from the wound
- Swelling, redness, or pain that hasn’t diminished in two weeks
What Are Common Injuries Treated at a Wound Care Clinic?
At UAB Medical West Advanced Wound Care Center, our specialists can treat various types of acute lacerations and contusions. The most common types of wounds we treat include diabetic foot ulcers, post-surgical complication wounds, pressure ulcers, skin infections, and arterial ulcers.
If you have another type of wound, we can still help you at UAB Medical West. Our team of experts is at the forefront of wound-care medicine and uses the most recent, evidence-based medicine therapies to treat your wounds. If you have questions about a particular injury, contact our Advanced Wound Care Center team at (205) 481-8790.
What Can I Expect at a Wound Care Clinic?
First, your provider will perform specific tests based on your wound to determine treatment and the cause of your long-lasting injury. Some standard diagnostic tests include blood tests, wound cultures, and X-Rays.
Once a diagnosis is made, treatment can begin. No two wounds are the same, so treatment will vary depending on your medical history, wound type, and symptoms. UAB Medical West offers upwards of twelve industry-leading treatments, such as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). When faced with an injury, our bodies require more oxygen than usual to heal. During HBOT treatment, you’ll breathe 100% oxygen to enhance your body’s healing and regeneration of new blood vessels.
While you’re at our wound care center, you’ll receive the highest quality of treatment. Whether it’s HBOT, negative pressure wound therapy, advanced vascular evaluations, or another type of treatment, our team will take care of you every step of the way.
Depending on your wound, you may need several visits for outpatient treatment. In between visits, your provider will instruct you on how to properly dress and care for your wound while at home.
What Are the Benefits of a Wound Care Center?
Beyond improved healing, there are countless benefits to seeking medical care at a wound center. Some other advantages include:
- Personalized medical care
- Quicker healing time
- Reduced risk of complications
- Wound-specific treatments not found over the counter
- Access to education/resources about at-home treatment
