UAB Medical West encourages our patients to be active participants in their health care through the “Speak Up” program developed by The Joint Commission.

Speak up if you have any questions or concerns. If you still don’t understand, ask again.

Pay Attention to the care you get. Always make sure you’re getting the right treatments/medicines from the right health care professionals. Don’t assume anything.

Educate yourself about your diagnosis, medical tests, and your treatment plan.

Ask a trusted family member or friend to be your advocate if you are unable to ask questions for yourself.

Know what medications you take and why you take them.

Use a healthcare organization that has undergone rigorous on-site evaluations.

Participate in all decisions about your treatment. You are the center of your health care team.
