The UAB Medical West FED provides emergency services equivalent to a hospital-based emergency department (ED). The only difference is that the UAB Medical West FED is conveniently located closer to home instead of on a hospital campus. If there is a need for admission, the UAB Medical West FED will arrange transport via a local ambulance service to a hospital for admission.

FAQs About Our Freestanding Emergency Department

In essence—there’s not much of a difference. The biggest difference is that our emergency clinic is not on a larger hospital campus.

The UAB Medical West FED offers the same emergency treatment that patients receive in a traditional hospital-based emergency room. The UAB Medical West FED will also honor the same 30-minute ED pledge as the hospital-based ED, saving valuable time for patients.

While we are equipped to handle “urgent” medical needs, we are not an “urgent care” facility. The UAB Medical West FED is open 24/7 and is staffed by board-certified Emergency Physicians and experienced nursing staff. The primary difference between the UAB Medical West FED and most urgent care facilities is that our FED can provide more robust service. Some of the things UAB Medical West’s FED has that typical urgent care does not include:

  • Board-Certified Emergency Physicians
  • Full-Service Laboratory
  • X-ray
  • CT Scan
  • General & Vascular Ultrasound
  • Direct Hospital Admitting
  • Helipad for Air Transport

Additionally, our emergency rooms near Hoover, AL, and surrounding areas are open 24/7 and ready to serve you no matter when the need arises.

Should the need arise, patients will be seamlessly admitted to a hospital via ambulance or air transportation. We are well-equipped to handle this kind of transfer, so you can feel comfortable knowing you will receive the best care possible no matter the circumstances.

No appointment is needed. In fact, we don’t take appointments at the UAB Medical West FED. This department operates as an emergency clinic, so you can come right in and be seen when you need medical attention the most. Whether you’re facing a broken bone, heart attack, or any other kind of medical condition, our board certified emergency medicine team members can help.

If you need non-emergent care and would like to schedule an appointment with a UAB Medical West physician or specialist, please call (205) 966-WEST.
