Inpatient Physical Therapy & Rehabilitative Services

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at UAB Medical West Hospital provides intensive therapy and medical rehabilitation services for patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, amputations, hip fractures, neurological disorders, and other medical conditions requiring hospital-based care from a multidisciplinary team. Located on the 5th floor of the main hospital, the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit offers:

  • 14 private rooms
  • 24-hour care by a registered nurse
  • One-on-one physical and occupational therapy for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week
  • One-on-one treatment with a speech therapist, if needed
  • Daily medical management by a physical medicine and rehab physician
  • Access to the hospital’s full spectrum of medical specialists and services
  • New, state-of-the-art rehabilitation gym

Our team of therapists, physicians, nursing, and case management professionals help lead each patient down their individual path to recovery.

Our rehab nurses help and encourage patients to practice skills in the room that they learned in therapy.

Our inpatient rehab physical therapists are skilled in assessing, treating, and educating patients who have an acute illness or disability. They focus on improving physical functioning in the area mobility which includes walking, stair climbing, balance and coordination, wheelchair use, strength, endurance, and posture.

Our inpatient rehab occupational therapists specialize in assessing, treating, and educating patients who have experienced an acute illness or disability. Our occupational therapists focus on improving activities of daily living, which include dressing, bathing, eating, toileting, and grooming. They also facilitate improvement in the areas of home management tasks, cognitive skills, upper body strength and coordination.

Our speech therapist is uniquely skilled in understanding how acute and chronic medical diagnoses impact a patient’s functioning in the areas of language, speech, cognition, and swallowing. Our speech therapist specializes in conducting functional communication and swallowing evaluations and providing therapy to advance a patient’s speech, language, swallowing and cognitive functions.
