UAB Medical West Hospital Authority, an Affiliate of UAB Health System, broke ground on its replacement facility on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. The new building, located at 4501 Bell Hill Road, is scheduled to open in 2024 and will include a 412,000 square foot, 9-story hospital with 200 beds and a 127,000 square foot, 5-story medical office building. The facility, a full-service hospital, will feature a new surgical and endoscopy suite, state-of-the-art imaging technology and more intensive care beds.

In 2017, Cushman & Wakefield / EGS Commercial Real Estate of Birmingham was engaged for site selection and to locate 46-acre development coordination off of I-459 in McCalla. Funded by the USDA, the total investment in the project is $400 million. Assisting in the financial efforts is Concourse, Raymond James, Thornton Farrish, PNC Bank, GNC, and Maynard, Cooper & Gale.

The design and build team includes Brasfield & Gorrie as the general contractor, HKS and KPS as the architects of the development, and CCI, Bhate Geosciences and Building & Earth as the site engineers. Leading the project for the UAB Medical West replacement facility will be Johnson Development as the project manager.

UAB Medical West has been planning the replacement facility for several years. Keith Pennington, CEO of UAB Medical West, stated: “Our current facility was built in 1964 and although multiple renovations have been made throughout the years, we knew that a new facility would have to be part of our future growth plans. We could not be more excited to work with this exceptional team of firms that will help us welcome this new state-of-the-art hospital to the residents of West Jefferson County.”

In addition to our current services, this facility will allow us to offer the following new services in 2024:

  • Robotic Surgery
  • Increased Number of ICU Beds
  • State-of-the-Art Imaging Technology
  • 3-D Mammography
  • 12 OR Surgical Suite
